This drawing is a continuation of a body of work I produced about two years ago. I had created a series of works in response to my mother’s passing earlier that year. My mother died by suicide in January 2020. It was an incredibly difficult experience to comprehend, I was dealing with a lot of different emotions at the time, and one way to make sense of them seemed to be writing and sketching. These entries in my sketchbook ended up being ideas for works and that series of drawings made up the body of work I called “Murmur”. With these drawings, I explored themes of loss, connection and transcendence. This particular piece, “Network” explores the idea of death and a “recycling” of energies between the physical world and the spiritual world. I believe we have a very limited understanding of our reality, death and what happens after someone passes away. Since the human body is compromised of matter and energy and energy cannot be destroyed, it simply changes states, where does all that energy go? A physicist would say that every particle that made up a person is still around even if their physical bodies are no longer among us. This might explain why many people say they can still feel someone after they’re gone because their energy is still present, it’s just less orderly.
